New WordPress 5.0 – What You Need To Know!

This past week of Dec 9th, WordPress released their new 5.0 software revision called “Gutenberg”.  There are important changes you need to be aware of. The upgrade has significant security improvements which are great. However there are significant changes to the text editor you need to be aware, especially if you create your own site content! In addition, there are some other important changes in Version 5.0 that I would like you to be aware of…

THE BIG CHANGES:
  1. NEW EDITOR: In this important upgrade WordPress introduced their new editor software, “Gutenberg”.  Isn’t that a good thing?  Well, many of our customers write their own articles using what is now called the Classic Editor. Some of you guys have been accustom to using it for over 8 years!  It was very MS Word like and easy to use.  With the new WordPress 5.0 release that editor is gone and has been replaced with their new “Gutenberg” “block” editor which is very, very different to use!  You might like it, then again you might hate it!  It’s as simple as that but we can help if you don’t want to use it after playing with it. Right now there is no choice. It is turned on by default!

  2. CONTACT FORMS: Any contact forms using Contact Form 7 is having their ReCaptcha (anti-spam) software V2  changed to the new version V3 standard from Google. . Without getting too technical it means that your customers will not need to do anything but hit the “Submit” button without fulling out characters or checking any boxes to prove they are human and not a digital robot. That’s great for users! This upgrade however needs to be done manually using new “keys” from Google, who now owns the ReCaptcha technology. If you don’t do the upgrade, the forms are vulnerable.

The new software also places a small icon / image in the lower right hand corner of all pages so visitors know their form submissions and privacy are protected. That image does not appear to be optional to remove, but is a good thing for security and letting your customer know you care about them. If you want to see what this looks like you can visit their page. Google ReCaptcha  All FORM SOFTWARE developers will be migrating to this standard this year so changing to a different form provider while possible is just kicking the can down the road.  If you want us to try and find a forms package that is not using this standard we can look for you at time and material rates.
